A new initiative has been launched to raise awareness about the health impacts of air pollution which the World Health Organization (WHO) calls “an invisible killer.”

The ‘BreatheLife’ campaign highlights measures cities can implement to minimize impacts, including through better housing, transport and waste and energy systems.

It was unveiled on Wednesday at Habitat III, the UN’s conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, underway this week in Quito, Ecuador.

WHO said that with more people moving to cities, air quality has deteriorated, causing respiratory and heart diseases as well as death.

Laura Gelbert has been talking to Dr. Carlos Dora, WHO’s Coordinator for Public Health and Social Determinants of Health, about how sustainable urban policies could reduce air pollution.
