Up to 1.5 million people in the Iraqi city of Mosul “are at extreme risk” from the campaign to retake the strategic location from ISIL militants, the UN has warned.

In a statement released to coincide with the Iraqi army-led offensive now under way, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien called on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure access to humanitarian aid.

Preparations to help people fleeing Mosul have been months in the making, but insufficient international funding threatens to leave many families without basic shelter or food, as Jens Laerke from the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) explains to Daniel Johnson.
