The risk of a polio outbreak spreading in the Lake Chad region of Africa is real, the UN Children’s Fund  UNICEF said Tuesday.

The disease resurfaced in Nigeria in August and now the agency is aiming to vaccinate 41 million people in the north-east of the country, as well as in neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Years of violence linked to Boko Haram extremists has also left a legacy of displacement and malnutrition, as UNICEF’s Christophe Boulierac tells Daniel Johnson.
