The prevailing “mood” in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) does not allow for a “genuine dialogue’ and a peaceful election process, the UN special envoy in the country has said.

Maman Sambo Sidikou, who is also the head of the UN Mission there, made the remarks as the Security Council prepared to discuss the current situation in the DRC.

Uncertainty over the proposed presidential elections and the jailing of opposition members are some of the reasons behind the rise in tensions.

Meanwhile, the country’s main opposition bloc called “Rassemblement” continues to boycott an African-Union led national dialogue launched in September.

Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira, Mr Sidikou began by describing what the situation is like in the capital city Kinshasha.
