The global aviation industry has reached a “historic” deal to cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, a senior official with the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has said.
The deal in Montreal, Canada follows the entry into force this week of the UN-led climate change accord, known as the Paris Agreement, in which countries agreed to reduce carbon emissions in order to keep temperature rises to below to 2 degrees Celsius.
From 2020, any increases in emissions in the aviation industry will have to be offset or balanced by activities like tree-planting or clean-energy projects.
ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard spelled out the details of the aviation deal to Jocelyne Sambira.
