Slavery and other labour abuses are at a “significant” level in the seafood sector, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Seafood industry representatives, fish workers’ unions, government representatives and international organizations such as FAO have been meeting in Spain to discuss, amongst other issues, how best to ensure that employees are not exploited.
Sandra Ferrari asked Uwe Barg, an Aquaculture Officer with FAO in Rome, to outline the extent of slavery in the sector.
