People need to be much kinder to the planet and to each other, the head of the UN Environment Programme has urged.

Erik Stolheim made the remarks on the sidelines of the 71st United Nations General Assembly debate.

People should stop throwing garbage into the ocean; stop conflicts that damage the environment; and protect all plants and animals from becoming endangered, the former Norwegian minister added.

The World Health Organization estimates that 7 million people die from pollution-related causes each year.

We cannot be the generation that destroys the beauty of the planet, Mr Stolheim warned Ben Malor.
