The landmark declaration, to protect the world’s refugees and migrants reached at the UN on Monday “depends on Member States taking action” to make it a reality for around 65 million vulnerable people on the move.

That’s the view of Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, speaking at UN Headquarters.

He said compromises that had to be made in order to reach agreement were necessary in order to make sure migrants are no longer seen as a “problem and a peril” but rather “a promise and a potential” for host countries.

Matthew Wells asked Mr Eliasson if he was confident that action would be forthcoming.
