World leaders are preparing to adopt a more "humane" approach to dealing with large movements of refugee and migrants, a senior diplomat has confirmed.

Ambassador David Donaghue of Ireland is co-chair, along with his Jordanian counterpart, of a UN Summit on the issue scheduled to take place on 19 September.

Heads of State and Government are expected to adopt a new set of global policy principles on refugees and migrants.

There are more than 244 million migrants in the world and 21 million refugees.

Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira ahead of the Summit, Ambassador Donaghue began by explaining what he meant by "humane".
