The selection process for the next UN Secretary-General has been a “delicate” and “game-changing process” according to the outgoing President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft.

For the first time in the history of the organization, the candidates for the next UN chief have presented their vision in open meetings for the future of the UN and answered questions from Member States.

However, despite the new transparency it is the 15-member Security Council which will make the ultimate decision behind closed doors as to who will replace Ban Ki-moon the current SG, as the post is often referred to.

Joshua Mmali sat down with President Lykketoft to ask him about this and other challenges the General Assembly has faced during the past 12 months.
