Children have suffered “unspeakable violence” during war but most of them remain positive, a senior UN envoy said ahead of World Humanitarian Day (WHD) on 19 August.

Leila Zerrougui, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, was referring to a photo exhibit entitled “When I Grow Up”.

The exhibit put together by the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, shows children aged between six and 18 dressed to represent what they want to be when they are adults.

The photographs turn a lens on the hopes and dreams of the millions of children around the world who face uncertain futures because of conflicts and disasters.

Having travelled to war-torn countries and met children in similar situations, Ms Zerrougui shared with Jocelyne Sambira what these images mean to her.
