A leading Brazilian social scientist and a Polish childbirth organization have been named as the recipients of this year’s UN Population Award.

The Childbirth with Dignity Foundation has worked for decades to improve reproductive health and women’s rights in Poland.

And the eminent population expert, Carmen Barroso, of Brazil, was honoured as individual laureate.

She was formerly Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region and a member of the Brazilian government’s Commission on Reproductive Health.

In February she was appointed to the UN Secretary-General’s Independent Accountability Panel on the Global Strategy on Women, Children and Adolescent Health.

Ms Barroso spoke to Laura Gelbert.
