The number of people addicted to drugs globally is now 29 million people - a new record - the UN said Thursday.

The finding appears in the World Drug Report, published by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

It shows that 207,000 people died from drug use in 2014, and that heroin use has risen sharply in North America, as well as Western and Central Europe.

One area of concern is increasing use of the so-called dark web, where drugs are bought and sold online, as Chloe Carpentier, chief of UNODC’s drugs and research section, told Daniel Johnson.
