The number of adults who are dependent on drugs globally has increased by two million to 29 million people, according to a report released by the UN on Thursday.

The World Drug Report 2016, shows that heroin use has increased sharply over the last two years in some countries in North America and Western and Central Europe.

Drug-related deaths have remained stable at around 207,000 annually.

Daniel Dickinson has been speaking to Jean-Luc Lemahieu, a policy director at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, which published the report.
