Hundreds of people were rescued but scores more are feared dead after the vessel they were on capsized near the Greek island of Crete this Friday morning.

The island has become a new destination for people trying to enter Europe, according to UN partner the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the incident highlights the ongoing dangers they face in trying to find refuge.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is working to help countries to disrupt the smugglers networks which profit from these perilous journeys.

Dianne Penn spoke to UNODC’s Panagiotis Papadimitriou about this latest incident at sea and what needs to be done to bring smuggling to a halt.
