Around 50,000 civilians trapped inside the Iraqi city of Fallujah, risk being turned into “human shields” by the terrorist group Daesh, according to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the country.

Lise Grande said that the UN and other agencies were doing all they can to protect them.

An Iraqi government-led coalition launched an offensive to take back Fallujah from the terrorist group Daesh, or ISIL, on Sunday.

It’s been under extremist control since January, 2014.

The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and its partner agency, Muslim Aid, have been distributing emergency aid to escapees, and will open two new camps near Fallujah next week.

Matthew Wells asked Ms Grande for the latest on the humanitarian situation.
