Selling fish that was caught illegally will become more difficult when a new international treaty comes into effect in June, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Monday.

The Port State Measures Agreement seeks to curb the US$23 billion annual trade from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, or “IUU fishing.”

So far, 30 countries have committed to the agreement which requires states to designate specific ports for use by foreign vessels.

These ships will have to provide authorities with information about their catches in addition to allowing for inspections of their log books, licences and other items.

Sandra Ferrari spoke to Lori Curtis, a Fisheries officer at FAO, which has been championing the treaty.
