More women in decision-making a first step towards gender equality

Having more women in parliament and other high-level public offices will go a long way towards achieving gender equality, a UN expert on the issue has said.

Baudouine Kamatari, Senior Gender Adviser at the UN mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH, says women must be part of decision-making processes that will affect their lives.

Ms Kamatari and her peers from other UN peacekeeping operations met recently in Uganda to review what they described as “progress and pervasive challenges” in their work.

She tells Ratomir Petrovic that in Haiti, gender inequality and discrimination take on many forms.
