The formation of a transitional unity government in South Sudan should result in action to tackle the numerous issues the world’s youngest nation is facing, according to the spokesperson at the UN mission there.

The coalition government headed by President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar was sworn in on Friday in the capital, Juba.

A political rift between the two leaders led to more than two years of bloody violence and human rights violations which have killed scores of people and displaced more than two million.

Cristina Silveiro has been speaking to Ariane Quentier, spokesperson at the UN mission in the country, UNMISS, who described the swearing-in ceremony as an “important milestone” towards peace.
