Governments need to start focusing on control and regulation of drug markets, rather than the traditional policy of prohibition.

That’s according to the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on HIV and AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Michel Kazatchkine.

Prof. Kazatchkine presented his latest report on Friday, in which he emphasized the negative effects of drug prohibition, including organized crime and a rise in diseases like HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis.

He spoke with Elena Vapnitchnaia about his findings and the upcoming General Assembly Special Session on drugs (UNGASS).
