Depression and anxiety are increasing worldwide and cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year, according to the UN.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank are now joining forces to move mental health from the margins to the mainstream of the global development agenda.

Ministers of finance together with development agencies have been meeting to discuss the overall benefits of investing more in mental health.

WHO’s Dr Shekhar Saxena is in Washington DC presenting a study that looks into the economic benefits of making mental health treatment accessible for all.

He spoke to Ana Carmo.
