There is urgent need to sustain momentum towards achieving peace in South Sudan, the Security Council heard on Thursday.

Although the country will celebrate five years of independence in July, it has been mired in political turmoil and violence for roughly half that time.

Conflict between government forces and armed groups has pushed more than two million people out of their homes, with some 200,000 civilians seeking shelter in UN-run protection sites.

It has also generated a humanitarian crisis, with half the population—some six million people—requiring humanitarian assistance.
