The retaking of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Syria is the first step in restoring and preserving the cultural history of the war-torn country.

That’s according to Giovanni Boccardi, chief of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit at the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.

Palmyra, a historic city that served as a major trading hub during the Roman Empire, was liberated from the ISIL terrorist group on Sunday.

Janie Cangelosi asked Mr. Boccardi about the possibility of rebuilding the monuments and artefacts in the Syrian city and what to expect going forward.
