Extractive industries like gas, oil and mining companies are taking control of water resources in local communities and even putting people’s health at risk.

That’s according to Sister Áine O’Connor, from the NGO Mercy International Association which is part of coalition of NGOs which addresses unjust and unsustainable extractive practices and policies.

These industries have been linked to food and water contamination in some areas, cancer and lung disease, environmental degradation and more, the Group warns.

Sister O’Connor who moderated a panel at UN headquarters on Women, Water and Wellbeing on Tuesday spoke to Carmen Cuesta Roca about this trend.
