Forests have a critical role to play in protecting water resources around the world according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Eight out of ten people in the world have difficulty regularly accessing enough water.

On the International Day of Forests, marked annually on 21 March, the UN agency is launching a new programme aimed at enhancing the role of forests in improving water quality and supplies.

Sandra Ferrari has been speaking to Elaine Springgay a forestry expert with FAO in Rome.
