The world has seen “massive protection failures” in countries witnessing atrocity crimes like Syria.
That’s according to the UN Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), Dr. Jennifer Welsh.
In 2005, UN member states made a commitment to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
The General Assembly is debating on Friday how to improve international efforts to prevent these crimes.
Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira, Dr. Welsh began by describing the past ten years as a “mixed record.”
