Fiji sustained terrible loss of life from Cyclone Winston, but it could have been much worse without the preventative measures taken before the storm hit, UN disaster relief experts said on Monday.

Robert Glasser, who’s the head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), expressed his condolences to the families of those who died after the category-five tropical cyclone hit the island nation on Sunday.

He told Daniel Johnson that early warning alerts sent to residents were crucial, and urged more governments to integrate disaster risk assessments into their national policy making.
