A singer from Mali has been explaining how she was not able to find her “place in society” after she was subjected to female genital mutilation, also known as FGM and genital cutting.

The UN estimates that 200 million women and girls around the world who are alive today have been harmed by FGM.

The practice is recognized internationally as a human rights violation.

Inna Modja, who was cut when she was just four years old, has been advocating for the rights of women and girls.
