“Strong political will” on the part of governments to end the practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM, is key to achieving its elimination.

That’s according to the UN’s FGM reduction coordinator, speaking ahead of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, on Saturday.

Nafissatou Diop is the Coordinator of the Joint Programme on Accelerating the abandonment of FGM, which is run jointly by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

The latest statistics show a 60 million global increase in the estimated number of women and girls affected, up to 200 million.
