World facing shortage of sand

Although it’s often thought to be an abundantly available resource, the world is facing a shortage of sand.
Sand is the main ingredient used in concrete, glass and roads, even our electronic devices. As a result, demand for sand is higher than ever.
To meet these needs, a multi-billion dollar sand mining industry has taken off; and where supplies are low, a thriving black market exists.
Bruce Edwards spoke to Pascal Peduzzi from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) about this phenomenon.
