The new head of the hybrid African Union/United Nations peacekeeping mission in Darfur, known as UNAMID, has said that he will work to bring peace back to the troubled region in Sudan.

Martin Uhomoibhi arrived at the operation’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, this week.

As Joint Special Representative (JSR), the Nigerian diplomat takes the helm at the second largest peacekeeping mission worldwide.

UNAMID’s 25,000-strong force works to protect millions of people displaced as a result of civil war more than a decade ago.
