An historic resolution to bolster youth in the global fight against extremism has been hailed as a “milestone”.

As members of the UN Security Council passed the resolution on Youth, Peace and Security unanimously on Wednesday morning, there was a rare round of applause.

The resolution is an “unprecedented acknowledgement”, according to the text, of the need to “engage young peacebuilders” in countering violent extremism.

An estimated 600 million young people live in fragile and conflict-ridden societies, which have proven to be the main recruiting grounds for numerous terrorist groups.
