Violence against women should be recognized as a “global epidemic” according to the Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, the United Nations’ gender agency.

Lakshmi Puri was talking ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked annually on 25 November.

The day kicks off a 16 day campaign to stop this gross violation of women’s human rights. The campaign runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

UN Women says violence affects at least one in three women and girls worldwide.

Pooja Premchandran asked Ms Puri how it could be stopped.
