The countdown has begun to mark the end of Ebola transmission in Sierra Leone, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday.

The announcement is expected on Saturday if no further cases of the killer disease are found between now and then, marking seven weeks of zero cases in the west African country.

Despite the good news, WHO’s Fadelah Chaib stressed however that continued vigilance is needed to stop the disease recurring, since the virus, which has killed more than 11,300 people to date, could still return.
