If the UN is to achieve ambitious global goals that are designed to help the future of humanity, it could do well to look to science, a leading physicist believes.

Professor Herwig Schopper, former head of the world-famous CERN research laboratory that’s credited with developing the internet, along with other major discoveries, told a conference in Geneva that the organisation’s special approach to problem-solving has a strong track record.

He explained to Daniel Johnson how almost 30 years ago, CERN scientists played a key role in helping to break the deadlock in US-Russia negotiations that led to a deal on nuclear disarmament, and how its role in the Sesame research project in Jordan is already promoting dialogue in the Middle East.
