Five new non-permanent members have been elected to serve on the UN Security Council from next year, with Japan and Ukraine the countries to watch, says the co-editor of a new book on its role.

The other nations with seats from January for a period of two years, are Egypt, Senegal and Uruguay.

But the head of the UN University, and Under Secretary-General, David Malone, says the relationship between Ukraine and permanent member, Russia, will be vital, due to on-going tensions between the neighbouring states.

His book, published on Thursday, is called The UN Security Council in the 21st Century. Matthew Wells asked him first about the council’s new membership:
