Five new non-permanent members have been elected to serve on the UN Security Council from next year, with Japan and Ukraine the countries to watch, says the co-editor of a new book on its role.

The other nations with seats from January for a period of two years, are Egypt, Senegal and Uruguay.

But the head of the UN University, and Under Secretary-General, David Malone, says the relationship between Ukraine and permanent member, Russia, will be vital, due to on-going tensions between the neighbouring states.
