Governments reminded that democracies need strong civil society

Discussions about gender equality must not be isolated from discussions about democracy and civil society.
That’s according to a panellist of the "Space for Civil Society" event, marking the UN International Day of Democracy on 15 September.
This year’s theme is a reminder to governments that successful and stable democracies require the presence of freely operating civil society groups.
Siobhan Garside asked Nilda Bullain, from the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), for her reflections on the UN Secretary General’s statement that “civil society is the oxygen of democracy”.
