Suicide is growing and must be recognized as a public health priority, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Each year, more than 800,000 people take their own lives, most in low- and middle-income countries, according to Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Swallowing pesticides is becoming an increasingly common means of suicide, especially in rural India.

Mr Saxena said stigma and laws banning suicide prevent many people suffering from getting the help they need.

Maria Carlino spoke to Mr Saxena and began by asking him about WHO’s message on Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on 10 September.
