Ending impunity for people who commit violent crimes in the Central African Republic (CAR) is essential to achieve peace and democracy in the strife-torn nation, according to the UN Human Rights High Commissioner.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein visited CAR this week, where he met with government and civil society representatives amid fresh allegations of sexual abuse by foreign forces stationed in the country.

More than two years of violence between Muslim and Christian militias have displaced nearly one million people.

Maha Fayek spoke to the High Commissioner about his trip.
