Parliamentary leaders from around the world have been called on by the UN to help end global poverty and give hope to the disenfranchised.

Parliamentary officials from nearly 140 countries are participating in the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at Headquarters in New York this week to look at ways to tackle global challenges to peace and democracy.

The three-day meeting is being organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
