The ill-effects of nuclear testing in Kazakhstan are still being seen according to authorities, even though the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site closed over 20 years ago.

Educating people about these devastating health consequences is a goal of the International Day against Nuclear Testing, observed annually on 29 August.

Though Kazakhstan sponsored the resolution behind the day, it recently announced plans to join the UN nuclear watchdog, IAEA, in launching a reserve bank of Low Enriched Uranium - the key ingredient of nuclear fuel.

Siobhán Garside met with Ambassador Kairat Abdrakhmanov of Kazakhstan to discuss the impact nuclear testing has had on the country.
