Nearly 225 years ago, enslaved Africans in what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic rose up against their oppressors.

Their fight for justice is remembered on the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed on 23 August.

The day was established in 1997 by the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.
