A new social contract between governments and their people is critical if the UN’s global development agenda is to deliver on its promise to end extreme poverty and inequality by 2030.

That’s according to Thomas Gass, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

On Saturday, all 193 countries that make up the UN signed an agreement which sets forth a plan for how to better fulfill the needs of humanity while protecting the planet.

Mr Gass has been speaking to Cristina Silveiro about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, scheduled to be adopted at a United Nations summit in September in New York.
