The crisis in Syria has to come to an end as no one is benefiting from the violence except terrorists, according to the UN envoy for the country.

Staffan de Mistura said the ongoing fighting—which has killed more than 250,000 people and created a massive humanitarian crisis— has only resulted in fatigue on the part of the Syrian population and the international community.

Meanwhile, he added, the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) continues to gain ground.

Ari Gaitanis sat down with Mr de Mistura ahead of his briefing to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

He spoke of the need for a combined regional and international response to ISIL, which is also known as “ISIS” or “Daesh.”
