As many as 20,000 foreign combatants from 80 countries are fighting in Syria, Iraq and other conflict areas, according to a UN expert group.

While most of these fighters are motivated by ideological reasons, some are also paid for their services which is why the UN Working Group on the use of mercenaries is monitoring their activities.

Gabor Rona is a member of the Working Group which has been meeting this week at UN Headquarters in New York.

He talks to Dianne Penn about the human rights implications posed by foreign fighters—in conflict areas and in their home countries.
