Haitians leaving the Dominican Republic are desperate and concerned about the future, according to a UN Police Officer stationed at a border crossing between the two countries.
Jose Diaz has been working for nearly a year in the UN Police Station of Malpasse, located about 50 kilometers from Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince.
Increasing numbers of people of Haitian origin have been returning to Haiti from the Dominican Republic since the month of June after missing a deadline to regularize their immigration status.
Stephanie Coutrix met with Officer Diaz at the Malpasse border and began by asking him to describe the situation.
