There are huge opportunities for agricultural growth in West Africa where a growing population and rising middle class have led to increased consumer demands for greater food diversity, convenience and affordability.

That’s according to a report released on Thursday which says the time is right as many regional countries have been relying on food imports to meet the burgeoning demand.

Sandra Ferrari spoke to Frank Hollinger, an economist with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and one of the authors of the report, Agricultural Growth in West Africa: Market and Policy Drivers.

He explained why more regional integration will be needed if West Africa is to make the most of its dynamic population and changing food patterns.
