Widows in Nepal continue to be rejected by their communities as they are seen as bad luck, according to the founder of a non-profit organization called “Women for Human Rights” which addresses single women’s issues.

Lily Thapa has been advocating for their rights for 20 years.

Her organization is a partner of UN Women, the United Nations agency for gender equality.

Ms Thapa says the South Asian country still enforces legal barriers which make it very difficult for women who’ve lost their husbands to inherit their belongings or land.

On the occasion of International Widow’s Day, marked every 23 June, Sharon Grobeisen met with Ms Thapa in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.

She began by asking her why discrimination persists against widows.
