Increasingly violent and threatening actions by a pro-government militia “could tip Burundi over the edge” according to the UN human rights chief.

Civil unrest broke out in the country in April following the President's announcement to run for a third term.

The UN human rights office says it has been receiving 40 to 50 calls every day from frightened Burundians all across the country pleading for protection or reporting abuses by the militia known as the Imbonerakure.

Serious human rights violations have also been reported against refugees in neighboring countries who attempted to flee the violence.

Alpha Diallo spoke with Cécile Pouilly, an OHCHR Spokesperson, and began by asking her to describe the violations being committed.
