The everyday reality of people with disabilities around the world has been changed by a United Nations treaty.

That’s according to the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Catalina Devandas Aguilar.

She is at UN Headquarters in New York for the 8th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, taking place from 9 to 11 June.

Ms Devandas says the goal of the meeting is to continue advocating for their rights to be included in a new set of global targets, called the Sustainable Development Goals, currently being negotiated by the international community.

Stephanie Coutrix began by asking her how many countries so far have signed onto the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
